Water Manipulation for Contest Prep
Understand water manipulation for bodybuilding shows. Why most approaches backfire and what actually works.
Water manipulation is the most misunderstood aspect of bodybuilding contest preparation. Many competitors cut water drastically before a show, thinking it will make them look dry and shredded. In reality, aggressive water cutting often makes them look WORSE.
Why Extreme Water Cutting Backfires
The Aldosterone Response
When you drastically cut water, your body responds by increasing aldosterone - a hormone that causes water retention. Ironically, cutting water makes you hold MORE water under the skin, creating a soft, flat appearance instead of the dry, full look you want.
Muscle Flatness
Muscle is approximately 75% water. Severe dehydration shrinks your muscles, making you look smaller on stage. The goal is to be dry between the skin and muscle, not to dehydrate the muscle itself.
A Sensible Water Protocol
7-4 Days Out
Drink 5-6 litres of water per day. Higher than normal to establish a high water intake baseline. Your body increases water excretion to match.
3-2 Days Out
Reduce to 3-4 litres. Your body continues excreting at the higher rate, creating a slight deficit that helps dryness without triggering aldosterone.
1 Day Out
Reduce to 1-2 litres. Sip as needed. Do not eliminate water entirely.
Show Day
Sip water throughout the day. A few sips every 30-60 minutes. You need water for muscle pumps backstage and for mental function on stage.
What Actually Makes You Look Dry
It is NOT water manipulation - it is body fat. If you are not lean enough (under 6-7% for men, under 12-14% for women), no amount of water manipulation will make you look dry. The answer is always more time dieting, not more aggressive water protocols.
The Bottom Line
Conservative water manipulation can provide a slight improvement in appearance for already-lean competitors. But it is the cherry on top, not the cake. If your prep is not on point, water tricks will not save you.
