Westside Barbell Method Guide: Train Like the Best

Coach Hafiz Abdullah

A comprehensive guide to the Westside Barbell training method made famous by Louie Simmons.

The Westside Barbell method, developed by the late Louie Simmons in Columbus, Ohio, has produced more elite powerlifters than any other gym in history. While the gym itself was exclusive, the training principles are accessible to anyone willing to learn. This guide breaks down the Westside system and how to apply it in your training environment in Malaysia.

The Philosophy Behind Westside

Louie Simmons built the Westside system on three scientific principles. First, the max effort method develops absolute strength by lifting maximal loads. Second, the dynamic effort method develops speed-strength by moving submaximal loads as fast as possible. Third, the repetition method builds muscle mass and addresses weak points through higher-rep accessory work.

By training all three qualities within a weekly structure, lifters develop well-rounded strength that translates to bigger competition lifts.

Weekly Training Template

A standard Westside week looks like this:

  • Sunday: Max Effort Squat and Deadlift - work to a 1-3 rep max on a squat or pull variation
  • Monday: Max Effort Bench Press - work to a 1-3 rep max on a pressing variation
  • Wednesday: Dynamic Effort Squat and Deadlift - box squats with bands or chains, 12x2 at 50-60 percent
  • Friday: Dynamic Effort Bench Press - speed bench with bands or chains, 9x3 at 50-60 percent

Each session includes 30 to 45 minutes of accessory work after the main exercise targeting specific weaknesses.

Box Squats as a Foundation

Westside popularised the box squat as a primary training tool. Sitting back onto a box breaks the eccentric-concentric chain, eliminating the stretch reflex and forcing you to generate force from a dead stop. This develops starting strength and teaches proper squat mechanics. Box height is typically set at or slightly below parallel.

Accommodating Resistance

Bands and chains are central to the Westside method. They increase resistance as you approach lockout, matching the body's natural strength curve. This teaches lifters to accelerate through the full range of motion rather than decelerating as they approach the top of a lift.

If your gym in Malaysia does not have bands or chains, you can approximate accommodating resistance with pause reps and tempo work, though the effect is not identical.

The Importance of Special Exercises

Westside uses hundreds of exercise variations to target specific weaknesses. Good mornings build posterior chain strength for squats and deadlifts. Board presses and floor presses develop lockout strength for the bench. Reverse hypers and glute-ham raises build the hamstrings and glutes that drive heavy squats.

You do not need every piece of specialty equipment to benefit from these principles. Standard gym equipment combined with intelligent exercise selection covers most needs.

Programming Accessory Work

Accessory exercises are selected based on individual weaknesses, not a fixed template. A lifter who misses deadlifts off the floor needs different accessories than one who fails at lockout. Common categories include hamstring work, upper back work, tricep work, and core stability. Three to five accessory exercises per session with three to four sets of eight to fifteen reps is standard.

Adapting Westside for Malaysian Lifters

Most commercial gyms in Malaysia have enough equipment for a modified Westside approach. You need a power rack, barbells, dumbbells, and a cable machine at minimum. While specialty equipment enhances the system, it is not mandatory. Many successful strength athletes train effectively with basic equipment.

Getting Started

Begin by learning the box squat and speed bench press technique. Master these before adding bands or chains. A personal trainer experienced in powerlifting methods can teach proper technique and help you identify weaknesses to programme around. Start with a three-month commitment to see meaningful results from this system.
