Time Under Tension for Muscle Growth: Does It Really Matter?

Time under tension - the total duration your muscles spend under load during a set - has been promoted as a critical variable for muscle growth. Some coaches prescribe exact TUT targets: 40 seconds for hypertrophy, 20 seconds for strength, 70 seconds for endurance. Others dismiss it entirely, arguing that only total volume and proximity to failure matter.
The truth, as with most things in fitness, is somewhere in between. TUT is a relevant variable, but it is not the most important one, and obsessing over exact second counts misses the point.
What Is Time Under Tension?
TUT is simply how long a muscle is loaded during a set. If you perform 10 reps of bicep curls and each rep takes 3 seconds, your TUT for that set is 30 seconds. If each rep takes 5 seconds, your TUT is 50 seconds.
TUT is influenced by three factors:
- Rep tempo - how fast you lift and lower the weight
- Number of reps - more reps means longer total time
- Rest within the set - pausing at the top or bottom extends TUT
What the Research Says
The Case For TUT
Several studies have shown that sets with longer TUT produce greater metabolic stress - the build-up of lactate, hydrogen ions, and other metabolites that create the burning sensation during sets. This metabolic stress is one of three primary mechanisms of muscle growth (alongside mechanical tension and muscle damage).
A 2012 study by Burd and colleagues found that performing leg extensions with a 6-second tempo (3 up, 3 down) produced greater muscle protein synthesis than performing them with a 1-second tempo (fast concentric, fast eccentric) when total reps and weight were matched.
The Case Against Overemphasising TUT
More recent research has challenged TUT as a primary driver of hypertrophy. A 2019 meta-analysis by Schoenfeld and colleagues found that when sets are taken to or near muscular failure, the specific tempo used does not significantly affect hypertrophy outcomes - provided the total number of sets and proximity to failure are equivalent.
In other words: if you do 3 sets of 10 to failure with a 2-second tempo and someone else does 3 sets of 10 to failure with a 4-second tempo, the muscle growth is similar. The lighter weight required by the slower tempo offsets the longer time under load.
The Practical Conclusion
TUT matters to the extent that it prevents you from using too little tension (bouncing through reps with momentum) or too much (grinding through ultra-heavy singles that barely load the muscles for more than a few seconds). But chasing a specific TUT number is less important than ensuring each set:
- Uses a challenging weight
- Is performed with control (no bouncing, no swinging)
- Approaches or reaches muscular failure
If those three conditions are met, TUT takes care of itself within an effective range.
What Is the Optimal TUT Range?
While there is no magic number, general guidelines based on training goals:

Most hypertrophy training naturally falls within the 30-60 second range when performed with reasonable control. A set of 10 reps with a 2-second eccentric and a 1-second concentric takes 30 seconds. A set of 12 reps with a 3-second eccentric and a 2-second concentric takes 60 seconds.
You do not need a stopwatch. Just train with controlled reps in the 6-15 range and you will be within the effective TUT window.
How TUT Varies by Exercise
Different exercises naturally produce different TUT per rep:
Compound exercises (squats, deadlifts, bench press): Each rep takes 2-4 seconds naturally. A set of 8 squats produces about 16-32 seconds of TUT.
Isolation exercises (curls, lateral raises, leg extensions): Each rep can easily be controlled for 3-5 seconds. A set of 12 lateral raises with a 3-second tempo produces about 36 seconds of TUT.
Machine exercises: The guided path and constant tension from cables or weight stacks make it easier to maintain longer TUT. Machines are ideal for high-TUT training because you do not have to balance the weight.
This is partly why a combination of heavy compounds (lower TUT per set but high mechanical tension) and controlled isolation work (higher TUT with more metabolic stress) is the most effective hypertrophy approach. Each provides a different stimulus.
Practical TUT Guidelines for Malaysian Gym-Goers
For Compound Exercises
Do not force slow tempos on heavy squats, deadlifts, or bench presses. These exercises should be performed with controlled eccentrics (2-3 seconds down) and explosive concentrics (as fast as possible on the way up). The weight provides adequate mechanical tension, and trying to slow the concentric phase significantly reduces the load you can use.
For Isolation Exercises
This is where TUT manipulation shines. Slow down your curls, lateral raises, leg extensions, and cable work. A 3-second eccentric, 1-second pause at the peak contraction, and 2-second concentric completely changes the stimulus compared to fast, uncontrolled reps.
For Bodyweight Exercises
TUT manipulation is one of the only ways to progressively overload bodyweight exercises without adding external weight. A push-up with a 4-second lowering phase is dramatically harder than a push-up with a 1-second lowering phase. If you train at home in your condo without weights, tempo manipulation is your primary progression tool.
TUT and the Mind-Muscle Connection
One underappreciated benefit of extended TUT: it improves your ability to feel the target muscle working. A half-second bicep curl gives you no time to feel the bicep. A 5-second bicep curl gives you ample time to focus on the contraction and make sure the target muscle - not momentum or compensating muscles - is doing the work.
For lifters who struggle to feel certain muscles working (common complaints: "I cannot feel my lats" or "My arms take over during chest exercises"), slowing down the tempo and extending TUT is the simplest fix.
TUT Is Not the Goal - It Is a Byproduct
Here is the perspective that makes TUT useful rather than confusing: do not train to hit a specific TUT. Train with controlled form, appropriate weight, and sufficient effort. Let TUT be the natural consequence of good training rather than the target you aim for.
A set performed with controlled 2-3 second eccentrics, no momentum, and taken to near failure will produce 30-50 seconds of TUT. That is within the optimal range. No calculation needed.
If you currently bounce through reps in 1 second each, adding a deliberate 2-second eccentric to every exercise will immediately improve your training quality. Not because of TUT specifically, but because the control required forces better form, greater muscle engagement, and reduced injury risk.
Slow down a little. Control the weight. Feel the muscle. The time under tension takes care of itself.
