Training Economy Principle
Get maximum results from minimum gym time. The training economy principle for efficient workouts.
Training economy means getting the most muscle-building stimulus per unit of time and effort. It is about choosing exercises, techniques, and programming strategies that deliver the highest return on investment.
High-Economy Exercises
These exercises train the most muscle mass per movement:
| Exercise | Muscles worked |
|---|---|
| Squat | Quads, glutes, core, back |
| Deadlift | Hamstrings, glutes, back, traps, core |
| Bench press | Chest, shoulders, triceps |
| Overhead press | Shoulders, triceps, core |
| Barbell row | Back, biceps, rear delts |
| Chin-up | Back, biceps, core |
Low-Economy Exercises
These work one small muscle group:
- Concentration curl (biceps only)
- Lateral raise (side delt only)
- Calf raise (calves only)
- Wrist curl (forearms only)
Low-economy exercises are not bad - they have their place. But if time is limited, prioritise high-economy movements.
High-Economy Techniques
Supersets
Pair non-competing exercises: bench press + barbell row. Same time, double the work.
Compound Sets
Two exercises for the same muscle back-to-back: dumbbell press + push-up. More stimulus, less rest time.
Myo-Reps
One activation set near failure, then 3-5 mini-sets of 3-5 reps with 10-15 seconds rest. Achieves the same stimulus as traditional sets in half the time.
The 80/20 Training Session
If you only have 30 minutes:
- Pick ONE lower body compound (5 minutes)
- Pick ONE upper body push (5 minutes)
- Pick ONE upper body pull (5 minutes)
- Superset them in rotating fashion (15 minutes)
That hits your entire body in 30 minutes. Not ideal, but far better than skipping the gym because you do not have a full hour.
Malaysian Context
Many Malaysian gym-goers spend 90-120 minutes in the gym - much of it resting, scrolling phones, or doing low-value exercises. A focused 45-minute session with high-economy exercises will produce better results than a wandering 2-hour session.
