Pendulum Squat Machine Guide
How to use the pendulum squat machine for quad development. Technique and foot placement guide.
The pendulum squat machine is becoming more common in Malaysian gyms, especially premium ones. It offers a unique squat variation that targets the quads with minimal lower back stress.
What Makes It Special
Unlike a hack squat where the platform moves linearly, the pendulum squat swings on an arc (like a pendulum). This creates a different loading pattern - heavier at the bottom where your quads are most stretched, and lighter at the top.
This makes it exceptional for quad development because the hardest part of the rep aligns with the position where your quads are under the most tension.
Technique
- Set up with shoulders under the pads, feet on the platform
- Release the safety and control the descent
- Go as deep as your mobility allows - depth is king on this machine
- Drive up through the balls of your feet for more quad emphasis
- Do not lock out fully at the top - keep tension on the quads
Foot Placement
- Low on platform: Maximum quad stretch and activation - the default position
- High on platform: More glute and hamstring involvement
- Narrow stance: Emphasises outer quad sweep
- Wide stance: Emphasises inner quad (vastus medialis)
Programming
- 3-4 sets of 10-15 reps (higher reps work best on this machine)
- Use after barbell squats or as a primary leg exercise
- Focus on depth and control, not weight
- Tempo: 3 seconds down, 1 second pause at bottom, 2 seconds up
Availability in Malaysia
Not all gyms have this machine. You are most likely to find it at:
- Premium chains (Fitness First Platinum, Anytime Fitness premium locations)
- Hardcore/bodybuilding gyms
- Newly opened commercial gyms with modern equipment
