Peak Week Competition Protocol
Coach Hafiz Rahman
How to peak for a bodybuilding competition. Water, carbs, and training manipulation for show day.
Peak week is the final 5-7 days before a bodybuilding competition. The goal is to look your absolute best on stage - full, dry, and vascular. But peak week is also where many competitors ruin months of preparation by trying to manipulate too many variables at once.
The Conservative Approach (Recommended)
Most coaches agree: the best peak week is the one where you change the LEAST.
Monday-Wednesday (5-3 Days Out)
- Continue normal diet
- Normal water intake (3-4 litres)
- Light training - depletion workouts with higher reps (15-20) to empty glycogen stores
- Normal sodium intake
Thursday-Friday (2-1 Days Out)
- Increase carbohydrates by 50-100% (carb load) - rice, oats, sweet potato
- Maintain water intake
- No training or very light posing practice
- Reduce fibre to prevent bloating
Show Day
- Small frequent carb meals every 2-3 hours
- Sip water - do not eliminate it entirely
- Pump up backstage 15-20 minutes before going on
- Rice cakes, honey, and dark chocolate backstage for quick carbs and pump
What NOT to Do
- Do not cut water completely - dehydration makes you look flat, not dry
- Do not try new supplements - peak week is not the time to experiment
- Do not drastically cut sodium - this causes water retention rebound
- Do not overtrain - you cannot build muscle in the last week
- Do not panic - trust the prep you have done over the last 12-16 weeks
