Leg Press vs Squats: Which Is Better for Building Legs?

Functional strength transfer. Squatting mirrors real-world movements - sitting, standing, lifting objects, climbing stairs. Core development. Supporting a heavy barbell on your back demands tremendous core stabilisation. Over time, squats build a strong, resilient midsection that protects your spine.

Disadvantages

Higher training volume. Because the leg press is less fatiguing systemically (no core or back stabilisation demand), you can perform more total volume with less overall body fatigue.
Easier to learn. A beginner can perform a leg press with reasonable form on their first attempt. This accessibility is valuable for people new to the gym who need to start building leg strength immediately.
Foot placement versatility. By adjusting your foot position on the platform - high, low, wide, narrow - you can shift emphasis between quads, hamstrings, and glutes within the same exercise.
Disadvantages
No core engagement. The machine supports your back and stabilises the load, meaning your core gets essentially no training benefit.
Limited functional transfer. The seated, fixed-path movement pattern does not replicate real-world movements. Leg press strength does not transfer to athletic performance as effectively as squat strength.
Knee stress potential. Despite being machine-guided, the leg press can stress the knees if performed with excessive range of motion, too much weight, or the knees tracking inward. Some people lock their knees at the top of each rep, which is dangerous.
Ego loading. Because you can typically leg press two to three times your squat weight, the leg press encourages loading excessive weight with partial range of motion. This looks impressive but provides minimal muscle-building benefit.

Winner: Tie. EMG studies show that squats and leg presses activate the quadriceps similarly when performed through a full range of motion with appropriate intensity. The leg press may actually provide slightly more quad stimulus because your lower back does not limit the exercise.
