Greyskull LP Program Review: A Smarter Linear Progression

Coach Arjun Krishnan

A detailed review of the Greyskull LP programme, explaining how it improves upon traditional linear progression models with AMRAP sets and intelligent.

Greyskull LP, created by John Sheaffer, takes the linear progression concept and refines it with several smart modifications. It addresses many of the shortcomings found in programmes like Starting Strength and StrongLifts while maintaining the simplicity that makes linear progression effective for beginners and early intermediates.

The Programme Structure

Greyskull LP uses two alternating workouts across three training days per week:

  • Workout A: Bench press 2x5 then 1x5+, barbell row 2x5 then 1x5+, squat 2x5 then 1x5+
  • Workout B: Overhead press 2x5 then 1x5+, weighted chin-ups 2x5 then 1x5+, deadlift 1x5+

The plus sign denotes an AMRAP set - you perform as many reps as possible on the final set. This single modification transforms the programme from a standard linear progression into something significantly more effective.

Why AMRAP Sets Matter

In traditional 5x5 or 3x5 programmes, every set has a fixed rep target. If you complete all reps, you add weight. If you fail, you deload. This binary outcome means you either progress or regress with nothing in between.

The AMRAP set in Greyskull LP creates a performance buffer. Even when the weight becomes challenging, you can still set rep records on the final set. Hitting 12 reps on a weight you previously got 8 reps on is measurable progress even if the prescribed weight has not increased. This keeps motivation high and provides a more nuanced picture of your development.

The Reset Protocol

When you fail to get at least 5 reps on all sets, Greyskull LP reduces the weight by 10 percent and resumes progression. Because of the AMRAP set, you quickly surpass your previous performance on the way back up. Each reset becomes an opportunity to build more volume and muscle rather than simply grinding through the same weights again.

Customisation Options

Sheaffer designed Greyskull LP with plug-ins - optional additions that customise the programme for specific goals. Frequency plug-ins add extra training days. Mass-building plug-ins add isolation work for arms and shoulders. Conditioning plug-ins include interval training for cardiovascular fitness.

A practical addition for most lifters is two to three sets of bicep curls and lateral raises on each training day. This addresses the aesthetic shortcomings common to minimalist barbell programmes.

Advantages Over Other Beginner Programmes

Greyskull LP alternates pressing movements between days rather than squatting every session. This provides more balanced upper body development. The inclusion of both rows and chin-ups ensures adequate pulling volume, which Starting Strength and StrongLifts both lack.

The AMRAP set makes every session productive. Even on a bad day when you cannot hit five reps on the first two sets, the final set gives you an opportunity to push yourself and extract value from the training session.

Implementing in Malaysian Gyms

This programme requires standard equipment available in virtually every gym across Malaysia - a barbell, squat rack, bench, and chin-up bar. Sessions last 45 to 60 minutes including warm-up, making it compatible with lunch-break training or quick evening sessions after work.

Who Should Use Greyskull LP

This programme suits beginners through early intermediates. If you are new to barbell training or have been training inconsistently and want a structured restart, Greyskull LP is an excellent choice. It is arguably the best pure linear progression programme available due to its intelligent use of AMRAP sets and sensible reset protocol.

Nutrition for Progress

To fuel linear progression, eat at a moderate surplus of 200 to 300 calories above maintenance. Malaysian food supports this well - a post-workout meal of nasi ayam penyet with extra chicken and vegetables provides protein, carbohydrates, and the calories needed for recovery and growth. Consistency in nutrition matters as much as consistency in training.
