Cable Lateral Raise: The Superior Shoulder Builder

Coach Faizal Rahman

Master the cable lateral raise for better deltoid development. Technique, common mistakes, and programming tips for Malaysian gym-goers.

Why Cables Beat Dumbbells for Lateral Raises

The dumbbell lateral raise is a gym classic, but it has a fundamental flaw: the resistance curve does not match the strength curve. At the bottom of the movement, gravity pulls the dumbbell straight down, producing almost zero tension on your medial deltoid. Maximum tension only occurs at the top, roughly 80-90 degrees of abduction.

Cable lateral raises solve this problem. The cable provides constant tension throughout the entire range of motion. From the first degree of movement to the last, your medial deltoid is under load. This means more time under tension, better muscle activation, and superior hypertrophy stimulus per rep.

Proper Form and Technique

Setup:

  • Attach a D-handle to the lowest pulley
  • Stand sideways to the cable machine, feet shoulder-width apart
  • Grab the handle with your outside hand (the hand furthest from the machine)
  • Lean slightly away from the machine for a fuller stretch at the bottom

Execution:

  • Keep a slight bend in your elbow (roughly 15-20 degrees) - maintain this angle throughout
  • Raise your arm out to the side until it reaches shoulder height
  • Lead with your elbow, not your hand
  • Control the lowering phase for 2-3 seconds
  • Do not let the weight stack touch down between reps

Breathing: Exhale as you raise, inhale as you lower.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using too much weight. This is the number one mistake in every gym in Malaysia. When the weight is too heavy, you compensate with momentum, traps, and body English. Drop the ego, drop the weight, and feel the medial deltoid working.

Shrugging the shoulder. If your trap is burning more than your deltoid, you are shrugging. Think about pushing the handle away from you, not lifting it up.

Going above shoulder height. Raising beyond 90 degrees shifts tension to the upper traps and can impinge the shoulder joint. Stop at shoulder height.

Swinging the body. If you are rocking back and forth, the weight is too heavy. Stand firm, brace your core, and isolate the movement.

Programming Recommendations

Cable lateral raises work best in moderate to high rep ranges:

  • Hypertrophy focus: 3-4 sets of 12-15 reps
  • Pump finisher: 2-3 sets of 20-25 reps
  • Mechanical drop set: Start with a full lateral raise for 10 reps, then partial reps from the bottom half for 10 more

Place them after your heavy pressing movements (overhead press, push press) and before isolation work. They pair well with face pulls for complete shoulder development.

Variations Worth Trying

Behind-the-back cable lateral raise: Stand in front of the cable with the handle running behind your body. This changes the resistance angle and provides an incredible stretch at the bottom.

Seated cable lateral raise: Sit on a bench next to the cable to eliminate momentum completely. Brutal but effective.

Leaning cable lateral raise: Grab a pole with your free hand and lean your body away at a 20-30 degree angle. This increases the range of motion and places your deltoid under tension from a deeper stretch position.

Cable lateral raises should be a staple in every shoulder programme. They are joint-friendly, effective across all training levels, and available at virtually every gym in Malaysia. If you have been relying solely on dumbbell lateral raises, make the switch for one mesocycle and compare the results.
