Resistance Band Pull-Apart Guide
Master the band pull-apart for better posture and shoulder health. The simplest exercise most people skip.
The band pull-apart is possibly the most beneficial exercise per unit of effort. It takes 30 seconds, requires a RM5-15 resistance band, and dramatically improves posture and shoulder health when done daily.
Why Band Pull-Aparts Matter
Modern Malaysian life involves hours of sitting hunched over phones and laptops. This creates:
- Internally rotated shoulders
- Weak rear deltoids and rhomboids
- Tight chest muscles
- Forward head posture
Band pull-aparts directly counteract all of these by strengthening the muscles that pull your shoulders back and down.
How to Do Them
- Hold a light resistance band at arm's length in front of you
- Hands shoulder-width apart, palms facing down
- Keeping arms straight, pull the band apart by squeezing your shoulder blades together
- The band should touch your chest at full contraction
- Slowly return to start
Programming
Daily maintenance: 3 sets of 15-20 reps (takes 2 minutes) Before upper body training: 2 sets of 15 as part of warm-up Between bench press sets: 1 set of 15 (improves shoulder health and balances pushing with pulling)
Variations
- Overhand grip: Standard - targets rear delts and rhomboids
- Underhand grip: More external rotation - targets lower traps
- Overhead pull-apart: Band above head - targets upper traps and mid-back
- Face pull with band: Pull to face level with elbows high - best for rotator cuff
Buy Bands in Malaysia
