Everything about the CrossFit Open in Malaysia. Preparation tips, local boxes, scaling options, and what to expect at your first CrossFit Open competition.
The CrossFit Open is the largest participatory fitness event in the world. Every year, hundreds of thousands of athletes worldwide - from elite competitors to everyday gym-goers - complete the same workouts over several weeks and post their scores online. Malaysia has a growing CrossFit community, and the Open is where that community comes together.
You do not need to be fit to do the Open. You just need to be willing to push yourself and have access to a CrossFit-affiliated gym.
What Is the CrossFit Open?
The Open typically runs over three weeks (it was five weeks historically but has been condensed). Each week, a new workout is released. Athletes have several days to complete the workout and submit their score. Workouts are designed with Rx (prescribed) and Scaled options so athletes of all levels can participate.
The workouts test a broad range of fitness qualities - strength, endurance, gymnastics, Olympic lifting, and metabolic conditioning. You might get a heavy barbell workout one week and a bodyweight chipper the next. That unpredictability is part of what makes the Open exciting.
Registration is done online through the CrossFit Games website. The fee is typically USD20-35. You register individually and can affiliate with your local gym.

Preparing for the CrossFit Open
8-12 Weeks Before: Build Your Base
Focus areas:
1. Cardiovascular base. If your engine is weak, every Open workout will be a suffer-fest. Build your aerobic capacity with:
- 2-3 sessions per week of sustained moderate-intensity work (20-40 minutes at a pace where you can hold a conversation)
- 1-2 interval sessions per week (work intervals of 1-5 minutes with equal rest)
2. Gymnastics skills. Common Open movements include:
- Pull-ups (kipping and strict)
- Toes-to-bar
- Muscle-ups (bar and ring - usually only at Rx level)
- Handstand push-ups
- Double-unders (jump rope)
If you cannot do pull-ups or toes-to-bar, the scaled versions offer alternatives. But practising these skills now will expand your options.
3. Olympic lifting technique. Snatches, cleans, and clean-and-jerks appear frequently in Open workouts. The weights at Rx level for men are typically 60-95kg for cleans and 43-70kg for snatches. For women, 43-65kg cleans and 30-52kg snatches.
At scaled level, weights are more manageable - typically 35-60kg for men and 25-43kg for women.
4. Strength. Have a solid baseline in:
- Back squat: at least 1.2x bodyweight
- Deadlift: at least 1.5x bodyweight
- Overhead press: at least 0.6x bodyweight
These numbers are not required, but they make most Open workouts manageable at Rx level.
4 Weeks Before: Sharpen Skills
- Practice the specific movements that tend to appear in the Open
- Work on transitions - moving between movements efficiently
- Practise pacing strategies for longer workouts
- Continue regular training but reduce volume slightly to avoid going into the Open fatigued
Open Week: Execution
- Rest the day before the workout (or do very light recovery work)
- Review the workout standards carefully - judges are strict about movement standards
- Warm up thoroughly: 15-20 minutes including specific movement prep
- Have a pacing plan - going out too fast is the most common Open mistake
- Film your workout if doing it without a judge (for online submission verification)
Rx vs Scaled: Which Should You Choose?
Choose Rx if:
- You can complete the workout with all prescribed movements and weights
- You have at least 6-12 months of CrossFit experience
- You can perform the gymnastics movements competently (kipping pull-ups, toes-to-bar, double-unders)
Choose Scaled if:
- Any prescribed movement is beyond your current ability
- The prescribed weights are near or above your 1RM
- You are new to CrossFit (less than 6 months)
- You want to complete the workout rather than spend most of it stuck on one movement
There is zero shame in scaling. The purpose of the Open is participation and personal challenge, not winning. I have seen first-time Open athletes scale every workout and have the time of their lives.
What the Open Feels Like
The atmosphere on Open workout day at a CrossFit box is electric. Music pumping, everyone cheering, coaches counting reps. It is the closest thing most recreational athletes will experience to competitive sport.
Most boxes run heats throughout the day - groups of 4-8 athletes doing the workout simultaneously with individual judges counting reps and checking movement standards. After your heat, you collapse on the floor, recover, then cheer for the next group.
The community aspect is what makes the Open special. Strangers cheer for each other. The person who finishes last gets the loudest support. First-timers are celebrated. It is genuinely one of the most positive athletic environments you can find.
Malaysian CrossFit Community Events
Beyond the Open, the Malaysian CrossFit community organises local competitions throughout the year. These range from small box throwdowns to larger regional events. They are a great way to get competition experience before the Open.
Follow Malaysian CrossFit boxes on social media for event announcements. Most competitions have beginner/scaled divisions specifically for newer athletes.
Common CrossFit Open Movements and How to Prepare
Double-Unders
The jump rope passes under your feet twice per jump. This is a skill movement that frustrates beginners. Practice 5-10 minutes daily. A good speed rope costs RM30-80 on Shopee - RPM or Rx Jump Ropes are popular brands.
Scaled alternative: single-unders (regular jump rope), usually at double the rep count.
Thrusters
A front squat that transitions directly into an overhead press. The most brutal movement in CrossFit when done at high reps. Standard Open weight: 43kg (men Rx), 30kg (women Rx).
Wall Balls
Squat with a medicine ball, then throw it to a target on the wall (10 feet for men, 9 feet for women). Standard ball weight: 9kg (men), 6kg (women). These appear in almost every Open.
Chest-to-Bar Pull-Ups
Kipping pull-ups where your chest must make contact with the bar, not just your chin clearing it. Harder than regular pull-ups - practice the higher pull and the kipping rhythm.
Should You Do the CrossFit Open?
If you train at a CrossFit box or have access to one - yes. Even if you are new. Even if you are not "fit enough." The Open is designed for everyone, and the scaled division ensures every workout is accessible.
If you train at a regular gym and want to try - many boxes welcome non-members for Open workouts at a drop-in rate. Call ahead and ask.
The worst that happens: you struggle through a workout, feel humbled, and discover new fitness goals to work toward. The best that happens: you surprise yourself, connect with an incredible community, and catch the competitive bug that makes training ten times more engaging.
Register, show up, and give it everything you have. That is all the Open asks.
