Compression Garments for Recovery
Do compression garments improve workout recovery? An honest review for Malaysian fitness enthusiasts.
Compression tights, sleeves, and socks are everywhere in Malaysian gyms. But do they actually help recovery, or are they just expensive fashion?
What Compression Garments Claim to Do
- Improve blood flow and reduce swelling
- Speed up recovery between training sessions
- Reduce muscle soreness (DOMS)
- Improve performance during exercise
What the Research Says
For Recovery (Wearing After Exercise)
Moderate evidence that compression garments worn for 12-24 hours after intense exercise may:
- Reduce muscle soreness by 10-15%
- Slightly reduce swelling
- Improve perceived recovery
For Performance (Wearing During Exercise)
Weak evidence. Most studies show minimal or no performance benefit during training. The psychological effect (feeling supported) may matter more than any physiological effect.
For Travel Recovery
Some evidence that compression socks during long flights reduce leg swelling and discomfort - relevant for Malaysian athletes travelling for competition.
Practical Recommendations
Worth buying:
- Compression socks for recovery after intense leg sessions (RM30-60 on Shopee)
- Knee sleeves for squat support (RM40-100) - these provide warmth and proprioceptive feedback
Probably not worth the premium:
- Full compression tights for recovery (RM100-300) - the evidence does not justify the cost for most recreational gym-goers
- Compression shirts - minimal benefit
The Honest Take
Compression garments provide a small recovery benefit - similar in magnitude to foam rolling. If you have the budget and they make you feel better, wear them. But they are nowhere near as impactful as sleep, nutrition, and proper programming.
Your RM200 for compression tights would likely do more for your recovery if spent on a good pillow for better sleep.
