Cable Lateral Raise Technique

Coach Kelvin Lim

Why cable lateral raises are superior to dumbbells for side delt development. Technique and programming.

Cable lateral raises provide constant tension through the entire range of motion - something dumbbell lateral raises cannot do. At the bottom of a dumbbell lateral raise, gravity pulls straight down, providing almost zero tension on the side delt. Cables fix this problem.

Why Cables Are Superior

Tension Curve

  • Dumbbell: Zero tension at bottom, maximum at 90 degrees, decreasing above
  • Cable: Consistent tension from start to finish

This means every inch of a cable lateral raise works your side delt. With dumbbells, the first 30 degrees are essentially wasted.

Technique

  1. Stand sideways to a low cable pulley
  2. Grab the handle with the far hand (cable crosses behind your body)
  3. Slight bend in elbow - maintain throughout
  4. Raise your arm out to the side until shoulder height
  5. Lower slowly - 3 seconds down
  6. Do not go above shoulder height - this shifts work to traps

Key Cues

  • Lead with your elbow - imagine pouring water from a jug
  • Slight forward lean - 10-15 degrees forward puts the side delt in a better line of pull
  • Pinky up - internally rotate slightly at the top for maximum side delt activation (controversial but many coaches swear by it)

Programming

  • 3-4 sets of 12-20 reps per arm
  • Light weight - side delts respond to volume, not heavy loads
  • 3-4 times per week (side delts recover quickly and need frequency)
  • Can be done at the end of any session - takes 5 minutes

Alternative: Behind-the-Back Cable Lateral Raise

Stand with the cable behind you. This creates even more tension at the bottom of the movement and provides a unique stretch. Try both and use whichever gives you a better mind-muscle connection.

For Malaysian gym-goers, the cable machine is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment. Learning cable lateral raises gives you a side delt exercise you can do even when dumbbells are all taken during peak hours.
