Chest Dip: Proper Form Guide
Learn proper chest dip form to build a bigger chest. Technique tips and common mistakes.
Chest dips target the lower chest when done with a forward lean. Most people do dips upright, which shifts the work to triceps. Here is how to make dips a chest exercise.
Chest Dip vs Tricep Dip
The difference is body position:
- Chest dip: Lean forward 30-45 degrees, elbows flare out slightly, go deep
- Tricep dip: Stay upright, elbows close to body, shorter range of motion
Proper Chest Dip Technique
- Grip the parallel bars slightly wider than shoulder width
- Lean your torso forward - look at the ground between your hands
- Bend elbows and lower until you feel a stretch across your chest
- Push back up, maintaining the forward lean throughout
- Do not lock out fully at the top - keep tension on the chest
Common Mistakes
- Staying too upright - this turns it into a tricep exercise
- Not going deep enough - you need at least 90 degrees at the elbow for chest activation
- Swinging - control the movement, especially the descent
- Flaring elbows too wide - moderate flare is fine, extreme flare stresses shoulders
Programming
Bodyweight: 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps Weighted (dip belt): 4 sets of 6-8 reps - dip belts available at most Malaysian gyms for RM10-20 per session, or buy one for RM50-80 on Shopee Assisted (band or machine): 3 sets of 10-15 for beginners
Where Chest Dips Fit
Use chest dips as your second or third exercise on chest day, after bench press. They complement pressing movements by working the chest through a different angle and providing a great stretch at the bottom position.
For Malaysian gym-goers who train in busy gyms, dip stations are almost always available even when bench press is taken - making dips a practical alternative.
