Teh Tarik Calories: What Your Daily Fix Really Costs You

Coach Nadia Ismail

How many calories are in teh tarik? We break down the numbers and offer healthier alternatives for Malaysian tea lovers who train.

Teh tarik is the unofficial fuel of Malaysia. From mamak stalls to office pantries, it is everywhere. But if you are serious about your fitness goals, you need to understand what those daily glasses are actually doing to your calorie intake.

The Calorie Cost of Teh Tarik

A standard glass of teh tarik from a mamak stall contains roughly:

  • Condensed milk: 2 tablespoons - 130 calories, 22g sugar
  • Evaporated milk: 1 tablespoon - 25 calories
  • Tea: negligible calories
  • Total per glass: approximately 155-180 calories, 22-25g sugar

That does not sound catastrophic - until you consider that most Malaysians drink 2-3 glasses per day. That is 310-540 calories and 44-75g of sugar daily, just from beverages.

Over a month, three daily teh tariks add up to roughly 16,200 extra calories. That is equivalent to about 2kg of body fat in caloric terms.

The difference between teh tarik and teh O kosong over a year - assuming two glasses daily - is over 116,000 calories. That is roughly 15kg of body fat equivalent.

Why Condensed Milk Is the Problem

The distinctive sweetness and richness of teh tarik comes from condensed milk - essentially sugar syrup with milk solids. Two tablespoons contain 22g of sugar, which is almost the entire World Health Organisation daily recommendation of 25g for added sugars.

The condensed milk also spikes your blood sugar rapidly, leading to an energy crash about 90 minutes later. This is why you feel sleepy at your desk after your mid-morning teh tarik - and then reach for another one.

Healthier Alternatives That Still Taste Good

Teh C (Evaporated Milk Tea)

Replace condensed milk with evaporated milk. You lose some sweetness but keep the creamy texture. Ask for "kurang manis" (less sweet) for an even better option. Saves you about 80 calories and 15g sugar per glass.

Teh O Kurang Manis

Black tea with less sugar. Around 40-50 calories per glass. The tea flavour actually comes through more without all that condensed milk masking it.

Teh O Kosong (Zero Calories)

Plain black tea with no sugar and no milk. Zero calories, zero sugar, and genuinely good antioxidant content from the tea itself. This is the optimal choice for anyone in a calorie deficit.

It takes about two weeks to adjust to unsweetened tea. After that, regular teh tarik will taste overwhelmingly sweet.

Teh O Limau

Black tea with lime and a small amount of sugar. Refreshing, around 30-50 calories, and the lime adds vitamin C. A good compromise.

The Gradual Reduction Strategy

Going from three teh tariks a day to teh O kosong overnight is unrealistic for most people. Here is a practical approach:

Week 1-2: Switch to teh C kurang manis. You will barely notice the difference.

Week 3-4: Move to teh O kurang manis. The lack of milk is noticeable but manageable.

Week 5-6: Try teh O with minimal sugar (sikit manis).

Week 7-8: Teh O kosong. By now, your palate has adjusted.

This gradual approach has a much higher success rate than going cold turkey. Your taste buds genuinely adapt - the sweet receptors downregulate over time.

When to Have Your Teh Tarik

If you absolutely must have your teh tarik, timing matters:

  • Best time: Immediately after training. The sugar helps replenish glycogen, and the calories are more likely to be used for recovery rather than stored as fat.
  • Worst time: Late evening before bed. The sugar spike interferes with sleep quality, and sedentary calorie burning is at its lowest.

The Bottom Line

You do not need to eliminate teh tarik from your life entirely. But you do need to be honest about the calories. If you are drinking three glasses daily and wondering why you cannot lose weight despite "eating clean" - there is your answer.

One teh tarik per day, budgeted into your calorie plan, is completely fine. Three or four per day is a significant obstacle to any fat loss goal. Make the switch gradually, track honestly, and your waistline will thank you.
