Infrared Sauna vs Traditional Sauna: Which Is Better?
Compare infrared and traditional saunas for athletic recovery. Benefits, differences, and whether sauna use is worth it for Malaysian athletes.
Saunas have been used for recovery for thousands of years. The Finnish traditional sauna and the newer infrared sauna both promise improved recovery, better cardiovascular health, and reduced muscle soreness. But they work differently, and the evidence supports each for slightly different benefits.
For Malaysian athletes, where ambient temperatures already hover at 30-35°C, the question of adding more heat therapy to your routine deserves careful consideration.
How They Work
Traditional sauna (Finnish-style)
Heats the air to 80-100°C using heated rocks or an electric heater. Humidity is low (10-20%) unless water is poured on the rocks. Your body heats up through convective heat transfer - hot air warms your skin, which warms your core.
Typical session: 15-20 minutes at 80-90°C, followed by a cold shower or plunge, repeated 2-3 rounds.
Infrared sauna
Uses infrared panels that emit radiant heat. The air temperature is lower (40-60°C) but the infrared waves penetrate the skin directly, heating your body from the inside. You sweat at lower air temperatures because the heat penetrates deeper.
Typical session: 20-40 minutes at 45-60°C.
Evidence-Based Benefits
Cardiovascular health (both types)
Regular sauna use (4-7 sessions per week) is associated with a 50% reduction in cardiovascular mortality compared to 1 session per week. This comes from a large Finnish cohort study spanning 20+ years. The mechanism: repeated heat exposure improves vascular function, reduces blood pressure, and increases heart rate variability.
This benefit is well-established for traditional saunas. Infrared sauna research is growing but has fewer large-scale studies.
Pain and soreness reduction (both types)
Heat therapy increases blood flow to muscles, which accelerates the delivery of nutrients and removal of waste products. Both sauna types reduce perceived muscle soreness after training. Infrared saunas may penetrate deeper into muscle tissue, but the practical difference in soreness reduction is not clearly superior.
Growth hormone release (traditional sauna)
Traditional sauna at 80°C+ triggers significant growth hormone release - up to 200-300% increases in some studies. This acute GH spike may support recovery, though its long-term significance for muscle growth is debated. Infrared saunas at lower temperatures produce a smaller GH response.
Heat shock proteins (both types)
Both types stimulate heat shock protein production, which protects cells from stress and supports protein folding. This has implications for longevity and cellular health.
Detoxification (overstated)
Both types make you sweat, and sweat does contain small amounts of heavy metals and toxins. However, the kidney and liver handle 99% of your body's detoxification. Sweating out toxins in a sauna is real but marginal compared to your organs' daily work. Do not use a sauna primarily for detox - the benefit is overstated.
Which Is Better for Athletes?
Traditional sauna advantages
- Higher temperatures produce a more intense cardiovascular stimulus
- Greater growth hormone response
- More research backing the cardiovascular longevity benefits
- Available at most Malaysian gyms and hotel fitness centres
Infrared sauna advantages
- More comfortable (lower air temperature means easier breathing)
- Potentially deeper tissue penetration
- Longer sessions are tolerable
- Lower cardiovascular stress (suitable for older adults or those with heat sensitivity)
The practical answer
For most Malaysian athletes, use whatever your gym offers. The differences between traditional and infrared saunas are smaller than the marketing suggests. The biggest benefit comes from consistent use (3-4 times per week) of either type, not from choosing the "right" type.
Sauna Use in Malaysia's Climate
Malaysia is already hot and humid. Adding sauna sessions means additional heat stress on a body already managing tropical conditions. This is not a reason to avoid saunas, but it requires adjustments:
Hydration is critical. You lose 0.5-1 litre of sweat per 15-minute sauna session. In combination with normal daily sweat losses in Malaysia, dehydration risk is real. Drink 500 ml of water before your sauna session and 500 ml after. Add electrolytes if you feel lightheaded.
Timing matters. Do not sauna immediately after an outdoor training session in 32°C heat. Your body needs to cool down first. Wait at least 30-60 minutes after training before entering the sauna.
Session length. Start with 10-15 minutes if you are new to sauna use. Malaysian bodies are adapted to heat but the concentrated temperature of a sauna is different from ambient tropical heat.
Sauna Access in Malaysia
Most commercial gyms with facilities (Fitness First, some Anytime Fitness locations, hotel gyms) have traditional saunas. Infrared saunas are rarer - found at some wellness centres, spas, and recovery studios in KL.
Dedicated recovery studios offering infrared sauna, cold plunge, and compression therapy are opening in urban areas. Sessions typically cost RM50-120. For most gym-goers, the traditional sauna included in their gym membership provides sufficient benefit without additional expense.
When to Skip the Sauna
Avoid sauna sessions when dehydrated, during acute illness, after heavy alcohol consumption, or if you have uncontrolled hypertension. Pregnant women should avoid saunas. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or disoriented during a session, exit immediately and cool down.
