High Protein Snacks in Malaysia: 15 Options Under RM10

Coach Nurul Huda

Affordable high-protein snacks available at Malaysian convenience stores, supermarkets, and mamak stalls. All under RM10 and easy to find.

Hitting your protein target requires planning between meals. The gap between lunch and dinner - typically 4-6 hours for Malaysian office workers - is where protein intake falls short. Here are 15 high-protein snacks you can find at any 7-Eleven, petrol station, supermarket, or mamak in Malaysia, all under RM10.

Convenience Store Options

1. Hard-boiled eggs (2 eggs) - 14 g protein, RM2-3

Available at most 7-Eleven stores pre-packaged or at mamak stalls. Two eggs provide 14 g of complete protein with only 140 calories. The most cost-effective protein snack in Malaysia.

2. Greek yoghurt (individual tub) - 10-15 g protein, RM5-8

Available at Jaya Grocer, Village Grocer, and increasingly at 7-Eleven. Choose plain (unsweetened) or low-sugar varieties. Brands like Farmers Union, Emborg, or Marigold. Avoid "Greek-style" yoghurt - real Greek yoghurt is strained and higher in protein.

3. Canned tuna (small tin) - 20-25 g protein, RM5-8

Ayam Brand and other local brands are available everywhere. Eat it straight from the tin with crackers or just a fork. The water-packed version has fewer calories than oil-packed.

4. Chicken breast from mamak - 25-30 g protein, RM5-7

Walk into any mamak and order a piece of grilled or tandoori chicken. No rice, no roti - just the chicken. Wrapped in a paper bag, it is a portable, high-protein snack. Ask for "ayam tandoori satu" and you are done.

5. Protein bar - 15-20 g protein, RM6-10

Available at 7-Eleven, Guardian, and Watsons. Brands like Quest, Fulfil, and local options. Read the label - some "protein bars" have more sugar than protein. Look for bars with at least 15 g protein and under 10 g sugar.

Supermarket Options

6. Tempeh (100 g) - 20 g protein, RM2-4

Cut it into slices, pan-fry with a tiny bit of oil and salt. Ready in 5 minutes. The cheapest per-gram protein source in Malaysia after eggs. Available at every wet market and supermarket.

7. Cottage cheese - 12-14 g protein per 100 g, RM8-10

Available at larger supermarkets. High protein, versatile - eat it plain, with fruit, or on crackers. Less common than yoghurt in Malaysia but worth seeking out.

8. Edamame (frozen, 100 g) - 11 g protein, RM5-8

Available in the frozen section of most supermarkets. Boil for 3 minutes, salt lightly. A plant-based protein snack that doubles as fibre. Also available at Japanese restaurants.

9. Mixed nuts (30 g handful) - 6-8 g protein, RM3-5

Almonds (6 g per 30 g), cashews (5 g), and peanuts (7 g) all provide moderate protein alongside healthy fats. Buy in bulk from supermarket dry goods sections. Available at Mydin, Giant, and Aeon for RM15-25 per 500 g bag.

10. Roasted chickpeas (30 g) - 6 g protein, RM4-6

Crunchy, portable, and high in both protein and fibre. Available at organic stores and some supermarkets. Can also be made at home by roasting canned chickpeas with spices.

Mamak and Hawker Options

11. Telur separuh masak (half-boiled eggs, 2) - 12 g protein, RM2-3

The classic Malaysian kopitiam breakfast. Two half-boiled eggs with a drizzle of soy sauce and white pepper. Fast, cheap, protein-rich.

12. Tofu goreng (fried tofu, 3 pieces) - 15-18 g protein, RM3-5

Available at almost any mamak or nasi campur stall. The frying adds calories but the tofu base provides good plant protein. Pair with dipping sauce for flavour.

13. Satay (5 sticks, chicken) - 15-18 g protein, RM5-7

Five sticks of chicken satay provide solid protein in a tasty, portable format. Skip the rice cake (ketupat) if you are watching carbs. The peanut sauce adds fat but also some protein from the peanuts.

14. Keropok lekor (5 pieces) - 8-10 g protein, RM3-5

East Coast specialty made from fish paste and sago flour. Higher in carbs than pure fish, but still provides decent protein. Deep-fried versions are more calorie-dense - steamed or boiled versions are leaner.

15. Protein shake (homemade) - 25-30 g protein, RM3-5 per serving

One scoop of whey protein mixed with water in a shaker bottle. Prepare at home, carry it to work, shake and drink between meals. The most reliable way to guarantee your protein intake. A 2 kg tub of decent whey (RM100-150) provides 60+ servings at roughly RM2-3 per shake.

The Strategy

Keep 2-3 of these options available at all times. Stock your office drawer with nuts and protein bars. Keep canned tuna at your desk. Buy a protein shaker and bring it to work. The difference between hitting and missing your daily protein target often comes down to one well-planned snack.

Most Malaysians eat adequate protein at lunch and dinner but skip it at breakfast and between meals. Adding two 15-20 g protein snacks daily - one mid-morning, one mid-afternoon - fills the gap and turns a 70 g daily intake into a 100-110 g intake. Over months, this translates to meaningfully better muscle development and body composition.
