HMB Supplement: Does It Work?
Honest review of HMB for muscle building and fat loss. Is it worth buying for Malaysian lifters?
HMB (beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate) is a metabolite of the amino acid leucine. It gained attention from a controversial 2014 study claiming it could build muscle as fast as steroids. That study has been widely criticised, but HMB remains on supplement shelves. Here is what actually works.
What HMB Does
HMB may reduce muscle protein breakdown (anti-catabolic effect). This is different from building muscle - it helps prevent muscle loss rather than actively building new tissue.
Who Benefits
- Beginners starting resistance training - some evidence of faster initial gains
- Older adults at risk of sarcopenia - may help preserve muscle mass
- During calorie restriction - may reduce muscle loss during aggressive cuts
- Returning from injury/time off - may speed up the regaining of lost muscle
Who Does NOT Benefit Much
- Experienced lifters already eating adequate protein - minimal additional benefit
- Anyone expecting steroid-like results - the 2014 study was an outlier
Dosing
- 3g per day, split into 3 doses of 1g
- Take with meals
- Minimum 4 weeks to see any effect
Price in Malaysia
RM80-150 for a month's supply. Given the marginal benefits for most trained individuals, this is hard to justify when creatine (RM40-70 for 3+ months) provides much stronger evidence.
Verdict
HMB is not useless, but it is far down the priority list. Buy creatine, protein powder, and invest in good food before considering HMB. If you are an older adult or frequently dieting hard, it may provide a small benefit.
