Creatine HCl vs Monohydrate
Compare creatine HCl and monohydrate. Is the premium form worth the higher price for Malaysian lifters?
Creatine monohydrate is the most studied supplement in sports nutrition. Then creatine HCl appeared, claiming better absorption, less bloating, and lower doses needed. Marketing says HCl is superior. What does the science say?
The Claims
Creatine HCl marketing says:
- Better solubility in water (true)
- Better absorption (unproven)
- Less bloating (anecdotal)
- Smaller doses needed (unproven)
Creatine monohydrate has:
- Hundreds of studies proving effectiveness
- Decades of safety data
- The lowest cost per effective dose
- Proven at 3-5g per day
What Science Actually Shows
There are very few studies directly comparing HCl to monohydrate. The claims of better absorption and smaller effective doses are based on solubility data, not actual human performance studies.
Monohydrate has been proven effective in over 500 studies. HCl has been proven effective in... almost none, comparatively.
Price Comparison (Malaysia)
| Type | Price | Servings | Cost per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monohydrate (500g) | RM40-70 | 100 days | RM0.40-0.70 |
| HCl (120 caps) | RM80-150 | 40 days | RM2.00-3.75 |
Monohydrate costs 3-5 times less per day than HCl.
The Verdict
Buy creatine monohydrate. It is cheaper, better studied, and proven effective. The only legitimate reason to choose HCl is if monohydrate genuinely gives you stomach issues (rare), and even then, micronised monohydrate usually solves the problem.
Creatine monohydrate is one of the few supplements that actually works as advertised. Do not let marketing convince you to pay more for an inferior evidence base.
