Digestive Enzymes for Better Protein Absorption: Worth

Coach Jasmine Wong

Do digestive enzyme supplements improve protein absorption and reduce bloating? A science-based review for Malaysian gym-goers eating high-protein diets.

You eat 150g of protein a day. You feel bloated by your third chicken breast. You wonder if your body is actually absorbing all that protein or if some of it is just passing through. Digestive enzyme supplements promise to solve this - better absorption, less bloating, more gains. But do they actually work?

How Your Body Digests Protein

Protein digestion starts in your stomach, where hydrochloric acid (HCl) denatures protein structures and the enzyme pepsin begins breaking proteins into smaller peptide chains. The process continues in your small intestine, where pancreatic enzymes - protease, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and peptidase - break peptides into individual amino acids and small peptide chains that your intestinal lining can absorb.

A healthy digestive system is remarkably efficient at this. Research shows that most healthy adults absorb 90-95% of the protein they eat. Your body has been doing this for your entire life - it is very good at it.

The question is whether enzyme supplementation improves upon this already-efficient process.

What Are Digestive Enzyme Supplements?

Most digestive enzyme supplements contain a blend of:

  • Protease - breaks down proteins
  • Amylase - breaks down carbohydrates (starches)
  • Lipase - breaks down fats
  • Lactase - breaks down lactose (milk sugar)
  • Bromelain - derived from pineapple, breaks down proteins
  • Papain - derived from papaya, breaks down proteins

Some products also include betaine HCl (to increase stomach acidity) and bile salts (to aid fat digestion).

Does the Evidence Support Their Use?

For Healthy People on High-Protein Diets

Here is the honest answer: the evidence for digestive enzyme supplements in healthy individuals is weak. Your pancreas produces approximately 6-10 litres of digestive secretions daily, containing more than enough enzymes to handle a high-protein diet.

A few studies have investigated enzyme supplementation in athletes:

A 2008 study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that supplementation with a protease blend did not significantly improve amino acid absorption compared to placebo in resistance-trained men eating a high-protein diet.

However, a 2009 study found that a digestive enzyme blend reduced markers of inflammation and muscle soreness after intense exercise, suggesting indirect recovery benefits.

The overall picture: if you are a healthy person under 40 with no digestive issues, enzyme supplements are unlikely to meaningfully improve your protein absorption.

For People With Digestive Issues

This is where enzymes have genuine value:

Lactose intolerance: Lactase enzyme supplements (available at Guardian and Watsons for RM20-40) allow lactose-intolerant people to consume dairy without the usual bloating, cramps, and gas. In Malaysia, where 80-90% of the population has some degree of lactose malabsorption, this is genuinely useful.

Pancreatic insufficiency: People with conditions affecting pancreatic function (chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, certain cancers) genuinely lack digestive enzymes and require supplementation. This is a medical condition - see a gastroenterologist.

Age-related decline: Stomach acid and enzyme production decline with age, particularly after 50. Older adults on high-protein diets may benefit from enzyme supplementation to compensate for reduced natural production.

Post-meal bloating with high-protein diets: Some people experience significant bloating when eating large amounts of protein in a single meal. This is common among Malaysian gym-goers who eat 40-50g of protein per meal after years of eating 10-15g. Enzyme supplements may provide temporary relief while the gut adapts to higher protein intake.

Practical Approach to Better Protein Digestion

Before spending money on enzyme supplements, try these strategies:

1. Distribute Protein Across Meals

Instead of eating 60g of protein in two meals, eat 30g in four meals. Smaller protein loads are easier to digest. Your body produces enzymes in response to food - smaller, more frequent meals match enzyme availability better.

2. Chew Your Food Properly

Mechanical digestion starts in your mouth. Chewing breaks food into smaller particles, increasing the surface area for enzymes to work on. Most people - especially busy Malaysians eating at their desk between meetings - wolf down their meals in 5-10 minutes. Take 15-20 minutes. Chew each bite thoroughly.

3. Do Not Drink Excessive Water During Meals

A reasonable amount of water during meals is fine. But chugging 500ml of water with your chicken and rice dilutes stomach acid and enzymes, potentially slowing digestion. Drink water between meals and sip moderately during meals.

4. Include Natural Enzyme-Rich Foods

Malaysian food culture has several natural enzyme sources:

  • Papaya (betik) - contains papain, a powerful protein-digesting enzyme. Widely available and cheap in Malaysia. Eat a few slices of papaya with or after your protein-heavy meals
  • Pineapple (nanas) - contains bromelain. Fresh pineapple chunks after a high-protein meal aid digestion. Canned pineapple has less enzyme activity due to heat processing
  • Ginger - contains zingibain, which aids protein digestion and reduces bloating. Add fresh ginger to your cooking or make ginger tea after meals
  • Fermented foods - tempeh, kimchi, and yogurt contain probiotic bacteria that support overall gut health and digestion

5. Cook Protein Properly

Cooking denatures proteins, making them easier to digest. Well-cooked chicken is more digestible than rare chicken (which you should not eat for food safety reasons anyway). Slow-cooked meats - like rendang or stew - are extremely easy to digest because the proteins have been thoroughly broken down by heat.

If You Decide to Try Enzyme Supplements

What to Look For

  • A product containing a broad spectrum of enzymes - protease, amylase, and lipase at minimum
  • Enzyme activity measured in standardised units (DPP IV, HUT, LipU) - not just milligrams
  • A reputable brand with third-party testing

Brands Available in Malaysia

  • NOW Foods Super Enzymes: RM60-80 for 90 capsules on iHerb or Lazada. Includes betaine HCl, bile extract, and multiple enzyme types
  • Enzymedica Digest Gold: RM120-160 for 90 capsules on iHerb. Higher potency, well-formulated
  • Doctor's Best Digestive Enzymes: RM50-80 for 90 capsules. Budget-friendly option
  • Local pharmacy brands: Basic enzyme blends available at Guardian and Watsons for RM20-40

How to Take Them

  • Take 1 capsule with your largest protein-containing meals
  • Take the capsule at the start of the meal or with the first few bites - the enzymes need to be present when food arrives
  • Do not take on an empty stomach unless specifically directed to

How Long to Trial

Give enzyme supplements a 4-week trial. If you notice reduced bloating, less gas, and better comfort after high-protein meals, they are working for you. If you notice no difference, save your money.

The Bottom Line

For most healthy Malaysian gym-goers eating 1.6-2.2g of protein per kg bodyweight:

  1. Your body almost certainly absorbs the protein you eat with high efficiency
  2. Digestive enzyme supplements are unlikely to significantly improve absorption
  3. Bloating and discomfort are better addressed by distributing protein across meals, chewing properly, and including papaya and ginger in your diet
  4. If you are over 50, lactose intolerant, or have diagnosed digestive conditions, enzyme supplements have genuine value
  5. They are safe to try - they will not harm you, they might help, and the cost is modest

Focus on the basics: eat enough protein, distribute it across the day, chew your food, and eat whole foods that support gut health. Enzyme supplements are a small optimisation on top of these fundamentals - not a replacement for them.
