Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Personal Trainer

Coach Anis Hakim

Hiring a personal trainer is an investment in your health, and like any significant investment, you should do your homework. Asking the right questions upfront can save you from wasting money on an unsuitable trainer and help you find someone who genuinely matches your needs. Here are the questions that matter most.

What Certifications Do You Hold

This should be your first question. Ask for the specific certification name and the issuing body. A credible trainer will answer confidently and may even show you their credentials. In Malaysia, look for internationally recognised certifications from ACE, NASM, NSCA, or ISSA, or certifications recognised by REPs Malaysia. Follow up by asking when they last renewed their certification — this confirms they are maintaining continuing education requirements.

What Is Your Experience With Clients Like Me

A trainer who specialises in bodybuilding may not be ideal if you are recovering from a knee injury. Ask about their experience with clients who share your specific goals, age group, and any health conditions you have. An honest trainer will tell you if your needs fall outside their expertise and may refer you to a more suitable colleague — this is actually a sign of professionalism.

Can You Describe Your Training Philosophy

This question reveals whether a trainer has a thought-out approach or is just making things up session by session. Listen for evidence-based reasoning. A strong answer might reference progressive overload principles, periodisation, or specific coaching methodologies. Be cautious of trainers who cannot articulate why they do what they do or who rely on buzzwords without substance.

How Do You Handle Nutrition Guidance

Nutrition is critical to most fitness goals, so understanding your trainer's approach matters. In Malaysia, personal trainers should provide general nutrition guidance but not prescribe clinical diets — that is a dietitian's role. A knowledgeable trainer will discuss macronutrient balance, meal timing, and practical food choices within the Malaysian context. They should also know when to refer you to a registered dietitian.

What Does a Typical Session Look Like

Ask for a walkthrough of how they structure sessions. Quality answers include a warm-up and movement assessment, a structured workout with clear objectives, form coaching and exercise progression, a cool-down or flexibility component, and a brief discussion about recovery and what to do between sessions. If the answer is vague or focuses only on making you sweat, probe deeper.

Do You Carry Liability Insurance

This is a practical question that also reveals professionalism. An insured trainer has invested in their practice and takes client safety seriously. In Malaysia, insurance is not legally required but is considered a professional standard. If a trainer does not carry insurance, it is a warning sign about their approach to risk management.

What Are Your Rates and Package Options

Get full pricing transparency before committing. Ask about per-session rates, package discounts, payment terms, and cancellation policies. In Malaysia, per-session rates for qualified trainers range from RM100 to RM300 depending on location and experience. Understand what is included — does the price cover programme design, nutritional guidance, and between-session support, or just the training hour itself.

Can I Speak With Current or Former Clients

Testimonials on a website are curated. Speaking directly with current or past clients gives you unfiltered feedback about the trainer's reliability, coaching quality, communication style, and results delivery. A confident trainer will happily connect you with clients who can vouch for their work. Reluctance to provide references should raise questions.

What Happens If I Need to Cancel or Pause

Life happens — illness, work travel, family emergencies. Understand the trainer's policies around session cancellations, rescheduling, and pausing your package. Reasonable policies typically require 24-hour notice for cancellations and allow package freezes for genuine emergencies. Excessively rigid policies that do not accommodate real life are frustrating and often drive clients away.
